Beyond the Ballestas boat, the Paracas peninsula holds a national reserve of stark, beautiful coast — a place where the desert runs straight into the ocean, with cliffs, dunes and hidden lagoons and almost no vegetation. It's a different kind of beauty from the wildlife of the islands: elemental, empty and vast, sand and rock and sea meeting under a huge sky. It's a genuine highlight for many visitors, and worth seeking out if the itinerary allows.
Playa Roja and La Catedral
Two sights anchor the reserve. Playa Roja, the Red Beach, is exactly that — a beach of red sand, coloured by the eroded pink granodiorite of the cliffs around it, striking against the blue Pacific and the golden desert; you don't swim, but it's an unforgettable photograph. And La Catedral, the reserve's landmark rock formation, was once a cathedral-like natural arch over the sea — though its famous arch was largely brought down by the 2007 Pisco earthquake, so what remains is a dramatic viewpoint rather than the intact formation older photos show. It's worth knowing that before you go, so it's a discovery rather than a disappointment.
The catch: it's often skipped
Here's the important practical point: the reserve is a separate add-on from the Ballestas boat, and many packaged full-day tours from Lima prioritise the islands and Huacachina and either skip the reserve or only brush past it. If the desert-and-ocean scenery — Playa Roja, La Catedral, the lagoons — is something you specifically want, you can't assume it's included. Read the itinerary carefully, and if it's a priority, choose a tour that names the reserve or a dedicated reserve tour from Paracas.
How to see it well
The reserve rewards a little time, which is another argument for basing yourself in Paracas rather than rushing through on a Lima day trip. From Paracas you can take a focused reserve tour — some combine Playa Roja, La Catedral and the pink Laguna Rosada — or explore parts of it by bike, at a pace that suits the emptiness of the landscape. If you're only passing through on a combo day, just go in knowing whether your tour includes it, so the coast-and-desert stop is one you chose rather than one you missed.
